AAPG camaraderie was in full swing in December, which featured social projects and holiday celebrations throughout the region. The AAPG family in Trinidad & Tobago Chapter hosted visitors from the University of Suriname Chapter and took them on a 7-day Trinidad GeoTour featuring outcrop tours, industry visits and classroom sessions.
AAPG LACR volunteers had an active month in November, representing the Association at events in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico. Students and young professionals taught more than 3100 grade school students about geosciences at Earth Science Week activities.
In October 2018 the AAPG Latin America and Caribbean Region held its first-ever joint event with the SPE Colombia Section. The workshop, Optimizing Geosciences and Engineering to Maximize Colombia’s Offshore Potential, included high profile speakers and state-of-the-art technical presentations.
AAPG had a strong presence at regional events in September, with stands at the Mexican Petroleum Congress in Acapulco, the Peruvian Geological Congress in Lima and volunteer support at Rio Oil & Gas in Rio de Janeiro.

Sustainable development was a key theme throughout AAPG’s inaugural Energy Opportunities Conference held Aug. 22-23 in Cartagena, Colombia. This high-profile event convened 202 industry executives and government officials representing 94 organizations and 21 countries.
Latin America Caribbean Members kept busy in July organizing field trips and lectures and preparing for the Energy Opportunities Conference and Region Student – YP Leadership Summit coming up in Colombia in August.
Bid rounds, new technologies and the region’s energy future will be topics of discussion at the Energy Opportunities Conference, Exhibition and Business-to-Business Session in Cartagena, Colombia from Aug. 22-23. “We are moving beyond our technical arena to explore regulatory aspects, industry-government collaboration, industry- community relations, plus looking to the future of alternative energy and technologies,” said Victor Vega, Latin America and Caribbean Region immediate past president and general vice chair for Energy Opportunities.
