The famous phrase “I a geologist” is one from a young man 29 years of age named Charles Darwin. After his introduction to geology at the age of 21 by Adam Sedgwick, Darwin would eventually embark on the famous voyage of the Beagle which lasted from 1831 to 1836.
Geoscience education is turning out to be a good fit for the modern university, and an especially good way to position students for the future. In part that’s because of the nature of earth science studies, said Stephan Graham, dean of the geoscience school at Stanford University.
The AAPG Foundation is in its fourth year as a partner of Geoscientists Without Borders, an outreach program that provides humanitarian applications of geoscience around the world.
One cannot overemphasize the importance of understanding the data – how it was generated, where it came from, how it was manipulated and massaged, and whether the conclusions drawn are supported by the data or if is there overreach.
The United Kingdom has long flirted with the prospect of attempting to emulate the United States’ success with hydraulic fracturing for cheap and plentiful shale gas, but a recent study raises doubts.
Unconventional resources represent a bright opportunity for the United States' economic and energy future, but that is in no sense guaranteed. A misinformed public debate about the impacts and merits of hydraulic fracturing in particular and the oil industry in general threatens that future.
Our industry, science and profession have been taking note of the importance of being prominent and proactive in assuring the public and other stakeholders that the energy extraction industry implements environmental stewardship in a manner equivalent to its skill and innovation in extracting the oil, gas and minerals that society needs.
The industry might be tempted to relax or postpone environmental compliance activities, especially those that might be new or expensive. Succumbing to this temptation is risky and could prove more costly in the long run.
Maybe drawing a line in the sand isn’t the best approach to climate change, especially when the sand is shifting. A paper published in the journal “Nature Geoscience” in September theorized that the Earth might be warming a little less than climate models have predicted, by 0.3 degrees Celsius (0.54 degrees Fahrenheit).
I have very much enjoyed representing the Division as its president. It has given me the opportunity to work with all levels of AAPG membership in the United States and internationally. AAPG is truly a global organization.
In order to support the energy transition, optimizing exploration and production from complex stratigraphic-diagenetic conventional and unconventional plays remains highly important. At the same time, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) poses new technological challenges that will impact both the industry and academia for decades to come. This 2nd edition will present reviews and discuss technology developments in geological process-based forward modeling achieved during the last 2 years. New perspectives for future technology developments and implementation in industry workflows will be discussed and with the additional focus on CO₂ storage and other sustainability-related applications, the scope of the workshop will be considerably extended.
President Biden has laid out a bold and ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the United States by 2050. The pathway to that target includes cutting total greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and eliminating them entirely from the nation’s electricity sector by 2035. The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management will play an important role in the transition to net-zero carbon emissions by reducing the environmental impacts of fossil energy production and use – and helping decarbonize other hard-to abate sectors.

Local sea-level changes are not simply a function of global ocean volumes but also the interactions between the solid Earth, the Earth’s gravitational field and the loading and unloading of ice sheets. Contrasting behaviors between Antarctica and Scotland highlight how important the geologic structure beneath the former ice sheets is in determining the interactions between ice sheets and relative sea levels.
