Despite Pipeline Cancellation, Canadian Oil Still Flows

In North America’s history of building pipelines to transport oil, natural gas and petroleum products, somewhere along the way, the process became political. By pulling the presidential permit on the Keystone XL pipeline, President Joe Biden sent a powerful message: Even if a pipeline benefits citizens and trade relations with important allies, and even if it has met or exceeded design and regulatory requirements and secured community support, its fate can ultimately be determined by a whim.

Innovation Causation

It is sometimes said that every good idea and every innovation needs a good story. After 2020 we are now re-writing our individual and collective stories. Post COVID-19 reality has allowed AAPG members to reach beyond their normal geographical areas of influence. It is said that “necessity is the mother of all invention.” If that’s the case, then as a corollary I say that “failure is the father of most innovation.”

Net-Zero Emissions by 2050? Not Without Nuclear

In the quest to reach net-zero emissions of energy-related carbon dioxide by 2050, a longtime goal of the United States, other world governments and energy agencies, no one is even close to achieving it. Despite 2020’s largest decline in emissions as a result of less energy usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, the EIA anticipates “a rapid rebound in energy demand and emissions” this year. Furthermore, they project that by 2050, U.S. energy-related emissions will be 5-percent higher than 2020 levels. Although it looks unlikely, net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 is possible, according to at least one notable expert within AAPG, but not without a strong reliance on nuclear energy.

Utah FORGE Applies Unconventional Resource Methods for Geothermal Research

New ground-breaking advances are currently being made at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy using methods borrowed from the oil and gas industry for unconventional hydrocarbon development. Recently, geothermal history was made when Utah FORGE successfully completed the first of two highly deviated deep wells in the hot, hard granite that will form the geothermal reservoir.

The Heat Beneath Our Feet

On the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, its 11,000 residents are on the verge of an energy transformation. In about two years, their cost of electricity will no longer fluctuate with market prices, and not even a hurricane will stop it from flowing. In fact, over a 25-year period, residents will save an estimated $100 million in energy costs, based on today’s pricing. How is this possible? It is the result of a strategic conversion to geothermal energy developed by GeoFrame Energy, a newly created partnership between Schlumberger New Energy, AAPG Member Bruce Cutright and business partner Dan Pfeffer. Their goal is to make geothermal energy the most cost-effective and reliable means for providing clean, sustainable power.

A Renewed Look at the Anadarko Basin

'Molly Turko, even in these dark times of COVID and decreased worldwide energy demand, is at heart an optimist. “There is always a light, you just have to know where to look,” she said. And she feels that the Anadarko Basin, a place she has spent the last 10 years of her professional life, is a great place to start looking. For Turko, who has worked in multiple basins in the United States, including the Ardmore, Powder River, Appalachian, onshore Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain basins, said the Anadarko, along with the adjacent Wichita Uplift, may hold the most attractive possibilities.
