Continuing Construction and Destruction

Sclerosponge colony at 80 feet (probably Ceratoporella). This class of sponges was discovered only in the 1960's, appears to bridge the evolution of sponges into corals, and may represent the living relatives of extinct stromatoporids. They live in cryptic habitats, dark, secluded, and face little competition.
