Aerial view of south shore barrier reef, lagoon, Great Pond, and Great
Pond bar. The bar separating Great Pond from the lagoon is interpreted
to have been an earlier bay mouth bar, whose mechanical energy was cut
off by the growth of the offshore Acropora reef during
the last sea level rise. The Acropora reef is likely established
on a prior carbonate shelf edge, based on drilling data from the north
shore.
