Because of its significant impact on relative permeability, capillary pressure, stimulation methods, and ultimate recovery, the wettability of reservoir rocks is a critical factor of the petroleum recovery process. However, characterizing the wettability of shale with extremely low matrix permeabilities is a challenging task because of the dominant presence of nanopores in shale and high heterogeneity of shale compositions at multiple scales.

While the outcry against the petroleum industry drilling in residential areas is as high as ever, a small, privately-held petroleum and real estate company in Midland, Texas, is making headlines for pulling off what some might consider an impossible feat: creating communities where people are willingly moving onto active oil and gas fields and living harmoniously with t he industry.

Unconventional plays in the Permian Basin are nothing new to the shale scene, as the basin has been horizontally drilled and hydraulically fractured for years. Still, a new approach for evaluating sweet spots, particularly in the Avalon Shale of the play’s Delaware Basin, is slowly changing the way unconventional resources are explored – and perhaps one day, developed.
