In June, 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency released its long awaited draft assessment of the Potential Impacts on Hydraulic Fracturing for Oil and Gas on Drinking Resources. The major finding in the draft assessment is that there is no evidence that hydraulic fracturing has caused “widespread, systematic impacts on drinking water resources in the United States”.

We report the results of analysis and interpretation of 19,278 predrilling groundwater samples from water wells in the Appalachian Basin for dissolved methane collected from 2009 to 2012 (11,309 samples from northeastern Pennsylvania and 7969 samples from a western area that included north–central West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and southwestern Pennsylvania).

We herein document temporal changes in dissolved and gaseous methane concentrations in 12 domestic water wells completed in Late Devonian clastic aquifers in northeastern Pennsylvania over time periods from 0.2 to 2 yr. Wells with initial methane concentrations regarded as low (<5 mg/L), moderate (5–15 mg/L), and high (>15 mg/L) were all used in our study for comparative purposes.

Explorer Emphasis

 

The University of Texas at El Paso’s Department of Geological Sciences recently won first place in the Imperial Barrel Award competition. This was the school’s ninth year in the competition, and its first win, coming out of the Southwest Section.

Hydraulic fracturing of rock formations has been hotly debated during the past several years, and public opinions have resulted in numerous legislative actions that closely control or even ban the practice in different parts of the nation. Fracturing, however, actually has been used in the oil and gas industry for 67 years and in the granite quarrying business in North Carolina since 1903.

There’s been a lot of good news recently about water and hydraulic fracturing: the EPA’s and other scientists’ research into water consumption for hydraulic fracturing found minimal strain on water resources, and natural gas power generation significantly reduces water use in power generation.

The objective of this field trip is to examine the deposits of an upper slope and slope canyon to deep basin floor deepwater depositional system developing along a Pennsylvanian-age fold and thrust belt called the Ouachita Trough. The units under study are part of the Stanley Group, Jackfork Group and the overlying Atoka Group.

Carbonate rocks make up the majority of reservoirs being explored and exploited in unconventional resource plays. This trip will spend five days exploring a variety of modern, mud-dominated carbonate settings in South Florida, where the elements influencing the deposition of these unique strata will be observed first-hand and used as learning points for similar ancient deposits.

The field trip will include stops at Shumard Canyon and Bone Canyon to observe the scale and internal architecture of submarine channels incising the bedrock of the relict platform. Other field-trip stops will include Stratotype Canyon, Black Stove Canyon, and Rest Area Gully to observe basin-restricted carbonate and siliclcastic sediment gravity flow deposits, carbonate channel-levee complexes, failure scours associated with the downslope transport of olistostromal blocks, and thick (>50 m) accumulations of recumbently folded deposits associated with these failure events.
