The δ18O values of zoned dolomite-ankerite cements within shaly sandstone beds decrease with depth of burial in the Upper Cambrian Eau Claire Formation of the Illinois Basin. This trend is largely consistent across the basin as determined through secondary ion mass spectrometry.

The StatesFirst working group on induced seismicity just released its report,” Potential Injection-Induced Seismicity Associated with Oil & Gas Development: A Primer on Technical and Regulatory Considerations Informing Risk Management and Mitigation.” The report describes the causes of and ways to prevent induced earthquakes. It also looks at the interaction between regulators and the public, and the report includes case studies of how states have responded to instances of suspected induced seismicity in California, Oklahoma, Ohio, Illinois, and Colorado.

The idea of using lasers for drilling into the earth has long been to the oil and gas industry what flying cars and hoverboards are to the general public – the stuff of science fiction and futuristic fantasy. As 2015 fast approaches (contrary to what we were promised in the “Back to the Future” movies) we haven’t quite cracked the code yet on flying cars and hoverboards, but there might be a consolation prize in the works: Laser drilling may actually become a reality.

It has a new name, a new energy and a new lineup of experts, all primed to spread geoscience knowledge around the world. “It” is AAPG’s newly named Global Distinguished Lecture Program – emphasis on the “global” – which dates back to 1941 but continues to be the Association’s flagship initiative for offering the latest in geologic science to AAPG affiliated geological societies and universities.

The solution to heavy oil and paraffin-clogged mature wells can often by heat, but heat is hard to economically introduce into a well. Welcome to an interview with Richard Snow, Chief Scientist at PyroPhase, whose new technologies are designed to economically heat the reservoir and allow the oil to flow.

The Spindletop trip takes participants to the site of the “Lucas Gusher,” where on January 10th, 1901 in Beaumont, Texas, 100,000 barrels per day gushed from a salt dome formation. This discovery changed the economy of Texas and helped to usher in the modern petroleum age. The first six gushers in the Spindletop field produced more oil per day than the combined production of all the other producing fields in the world. The Lucas geyser, found at a depth of 1,139 feet, blew a stream of oil over 100 feet high until it was capped nine days later. Lucas and the Hamills finally controlled the geyser on January 19, when a huge pool of oil surrounded it. By that time, throngs of oilmen, speculators, and onlookers had already transformed the city of Beaumont. A new age was born.
