Energy Policy Blog

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that Europe consumed 18.7 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas in 2013; Russia supplied 30% (5.7 Tcf) of this volume, and 16% (3.0 Tcf) of the total natural gas consumed in Europe passed through Ukraine’s pipeline network; Slovakia gets 80 percent of its gas, and Bulgaria gets 90 percent of its gas from Russia via pipeline through Ukraine.

Discoveries were comparatively sparse, but they persisted steadily throughout the year. Here are some of the more significant discoveries of the past year.

Explorer Emphasis

Deeper targets, higher excitement: Industry enthusiasm for shale gas (and oil) plays just keeps escalating – and the interest is going global.

Explorer Policy Watch

The U.S. shale oil and gas production surge and the resulting shift of the United States from a major importer to an exporter of oil and natural gas are well known, but there is disagreement about what this means for U.S. and global energy security

Some members of Congress are again proposing rules to accelerate the federal approval process for natural gas export facilities, although any benefits would be years in the future.

Explorer President’s Column

As I have traveled to AAPG conferences during the past year-and-a-half I have been impressed by the number of symposia on shale gas.

Explorer Regions and Sections

It has been an interesting and eventful year in Europe for AAPG. With all the less-than-good news around, we felt it was important to maintain a program of events and activities throughout the year. Although we are constrained by the events in the industry we have still tried to match the wishes of the members.

Student Outlook

The IBA competition for the European Region of AAPG was held on March 27-29th in Prague, Czech Republic.

I was able to attend and meet many outstanding students from accross the European Region.

Houston, Texas, United States
6 April 2017

In Conjunction with AAPG 2017 Annual Convention & Exhibition (ACE)
This field trip focuses on the late Quaternary depositional systems of the upper Texas coast, including the Brazos River and its wave-dominated delta, the Oyster Creek meanderbelt, Follets Island, the San Luis Pass tidal delta, and Galveston Island. The trip will emphasize the physical processes associated with shaping these various depositional environments, and will discuss the stratigraphic occurrence of sand bodies associated with these coastal systems. There will be a focus on linking physical processes to the geological record, and also describing the sequence stratigraphic framework of the upper Texas coastal systems.
