DL Abstract

The geologic record places the modern sea-level rise into an historical context and can help inform discussions of the rates and magnitudes of future sea-level rise. With the development of large Northern Hemisphere ice sheets at 2.7 Ma, amplitudes of sea-level change increased, reaching over 100 m at times. A globally average sea-level rise of ~130 m followed the last ice age. We construct 21st century relative sea-level rise scenarios including global, regional, and local processes and project a 22 cm rise at bedrock locations by 2030.

DL Abstract

Oceanographic and outcrop-based data sets must be integrated for a comprehensive understanding of the geologic evolution of oceanic arcs. Using the geology of the Izu-Bonin-Marianas arc – better known than any other modern oceanic arc system – and the Mesozoic oceanic arc rocks of Western Mexico – better studied and arguably less deformed – this lecture will compare the two systems interpreting them in the context of global studies of modern and ancient oceanic arcs.

DL Abstract

This lecture presents a history of sea-level changes focusing on the last 100 Myr. Prior to the Oligocene (ca. 33.5 Ma), the Earth had been a warm, high CO2 Greenhouse world that was largely ice-free back to 260 Ma, though recent evidence suggests that 15-25 m sea-level changes observed may have been caused by growth and decay of small, ephemeral ice sheets. The growth and decay of a continental scale ice sheet in Antarctica caused 50-60 m variations on the 106 yr scale beginning ~33.5 million years ago (Ma).
