The lessons taken from U.S. shale gas successes hold major implications for China’s energy future, according to researchers at the Energy and Geoscience Institute at the University of Utah. The similarities and potential are explored in a paper to be presented at the AAPG International Conference and Exhibition this month in Istanbul, Turkey.

The title says it all: Determining Hydrocarbon Distribution Using Resistivity, Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwestern Mississippi. The purpose of the study was to investigate the TMS Trend in southwestern Mississippi using electric logs and IHS’s proprietary Petra mapping software to document the structure, stratigraphy and hydrocarbon distribution.

This lecture presents a history of sea-level changes focusing on the last 100 Myr. Prior to the Oligocene (ca. 33.5 Ma), the Earth had been a warm, high CO2 Greenhouse world that was largely ice-free back to 260 Ma, though recent evidence suggests that 15-25 m sea-level changes observed may have been caused by growth and decay of small, ephemeral ice sheets. The growth and decay of a continental scale ice sheet in Antarctica caused 50-60 m variations on the 106 yr scale beginning ~33.5 million years ago (Ma).

Reservoir characterization is an exercise in constraining uncertainty that arises from sparse sampling of the subsurface by widely spaced wells at lengthscales below seismic resolution. Outcrop analogs are an invaluable complement to well and seismic data in this context, because they provide qualitative concepts and quantitative spatial data to guide interpretations of lithology distribution in inter-well volumes. However, analog-driven interpretations of reservoir architecture are not straightforward to compare with dynamic data that describe fluid flow during production – the acid test of any interpretation of reservoir geology. The value of outcrop reservoir analogs is most fully realized when they are used to construct outcrop-based reservoir models that enable explicit predictions of flow patterns in a form that can be compared with routine reservoir-monitoring data.

There has been a revival in the interest in hydrocarbon source rock characterization associated with the growing interest in unconventional resources where these fine-grained sediments represent the complete petroleum system. To-date, the primary focus has been on marine unconventional systems. Consider, however, if lacustrine systems may represent future unconventional opportunities in areas where the conventional resource-base is dominated by lacustrine-sourced oil. There are a number of key differences in the nature of these systems that should be considered when assessing.

We have an unprecedented ability to realistically depict the spatial distributions of lithofacies in the subsurface thanks to developments in sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, geostatistics, and geophysics. As important as these developments have been, however, they in themselves have a limited ability to accurately predict rock properties–particularly in regions with high thermal exposures and restricted well control. We are developing a next-generation modeling platform that rigorously simulates processes in 3D at the grain scale. This 3D approach has the potential to provide unique predictive models of pore network geometries and grain contact properties for rocks in undrilled areas.

Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator (DHI) support for hydrocarbons in the Niger Delta has been recognized for several decades. This paper presents an overview of key controlling factors that impact seismic response and cause rapid transition from bright spots to dim spots, and the transition from amplitude to AvO anomalies. Many clastic Tertiary basins globally follow similar stratigraphic and diagenetic evolution, thus the Niger Delta example may be a good analogue for subtle DHI plays elsewhere.

The processes affecting the transport and deposition of mud in natural environments are still poorly understood, yet, understanding these processes is important because much of the earth's surface is covered with muddy substances, two-thirds of the sedimentary rock record consist of mudstones, mud accumulation impacts water reservoirs, harbors, and shipping lanes, and because mudstones are an increasingly important energy resource. From the perspective of a sedimentologist, the need for experimental work in mudstone sedimentology comes from the realization that many mudstones contain small-scale sedimentary structures that can potentially provide information about depositional conditions and history. However, as soon as one attempts to harness these features for interpretation of environments of deposition, one realizes that there simply is not much information available that allows us to link features observed in the rock record to measurable sets of physical variables in modern environments.

The geologic record places the modern sea-level rise into an historical context and can help inform discussions of the rates and magnitudes of future sea-level rise. With the development of large Northern Hemisphere ice sheets at 2.7 Ma, amplitudes of sea-level change increased, reaching over 100 m at times. A globally average sea-level rise of ~130 m followed the last ice age. We construct 21st century relative sea-level rise scenarios including global, regional, and local processes and project a 22 cm rise at bedrock locations by 2030.

IODP Expedition 313 (New Jersey shallow shelf) cored a 3-hole transect across Miocene seismic clinothems (prograding sigmoidal sequences) in topset, foreset, and bottomset locations, providing an opportunity to integrate seismic, log, and core data into a sequence stratigraphic framework. Our interpretations of sequences and systems tracts are made independent of any preconceived relative sea-level curves. Rather, we use basic seismic, core, and stratigraphic principles to recognize sequence boundaries, Maximum Flooding Surface, transgressive surfaces, and facies successions within sequences.

The field trip will include stops at Shumard Canyon and Bone Canyon to observe the scale and internal architecture of submarine channels incising the bedrock of the relict platform. Other field-trip stops will include Stratotype Canyon, Black Stove Canyon, and Rest Area Gully to observe basin-restricted carbonate and siliclcastic sediment gravity flow deposits, carbonate channel-levee complexes, failure scours associated with the downslope transport of olistostromal blocks, and thick (>50 m) accumulations of recumbently folded deposits associated with these failure events.

This field trip focuses on the late Quaternary depositional systems of the upper Texas coast, including the Brazos River and its wave-dominated delta, the Oyster Creek meanderbelt, Follets Island, the San Luis Pass tidal delta, and Galveston Island. The trip will emphasize the physical processes associated with shaping these various depositional environments, and will discuss the stratigraphic occurrence of sand bodies associated with these coastal systems. There will be a focus on linking physical processes to the geological record, and also describing the sequence stratigraphic framework of the upper Texas coastal systems.

Early efforts in formation evaluation led to the conclusion that well log responses available at the time did not provide unique solutions for determining whether or not an interval contained producible hydrocarbons. Also, deriving accurate estimates of permeability was problematic.
