I find it ironic that George Mitchell, the “father of hydraulic fracturing technology” (aka, “father of fracing”), a technology that so many people fear or hate because of its perceived negative environmental impact, was so passionate about the environment and sustainability. This is a message we need to convey.


A geoscience company some have billed as “Silicon Valley meets the oil patch” has undertaken a study over the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. Airborne geophysical datasets newly acquired by NEOS GeoSolutions were combined with existing seismic, well, and public domain datasets to better understand the potential of the Marcellus resource play in a roughly 2,500 square-mile area of investigation.


Colombian geophysicist Jaime Checa, the current president of AAPG Affiliated Society Asociación Colombiana de Geólogos y Geofísicos del Petróleo (ACGGP), is dedicating his presidency, and much of his free time, to combating misinformation related to seismic acquisition in Colombia.

Our industry is overwhelmingly filled with professionals who want to do the right thing the right way, yet real or suspected environmental impacts recur with some regularity.

The geologic record places the modern sea-level rise into an historical context and can help inform discussions of the rates and magnitudes of future sea-level rise. With the development of large Northern Hemisphere ice sheets at 2.7 Ma, amplitudes of sea-level change increased, reaching over 100 m at times. A globally average sea-level rise of ~130 m followed the last ice age. We construct 21st century relative sea-level rise scenarios including global, regional, and local processes and project a 22 cm rise at bedrock locations by 2030.

Human kidney stone formation (nephrolithiasis) presently affects 12% of men and 5% of women in the United States, generating an estimated annual healthcare cost of $2.1 billion. A first of its kind analysis is being untaken of the integrated role of human microorganisms (the microbiome) in influencing the dynamics of human disease-related mineral precipitation (biomineralization). Direct comparison and inference is being drawn from geobiological studies of microbe-water-rock interactions in Yellowstone hot-springs, Caribbean coral reefs and Roman aqueducts.

Shale gas and associated hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” has become a hot-button environmental issue in the United States and around the world. The purpose of this talk is to provide some background geological and engineering information on the issue and to take a more in-depth look at some of the environmental pros and cons of shale gas development.

Coordinated Geobiology research on Yellowstone hot springs and Caribbean and Pacific coral reef ecosystems have identified a suite of universally active microbe-water-rock interactions that fundamentally shape these ecosystems. While at first glance these seem to be wildly different and unrelated environments, close examination reveals a host of striking similarities and scientific parallels.
