In December 2015, the Committee on Offshore Science and Assessment held its inaugural meeting at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The committee, which was established by NAS’s Ocean Studies and Earth Sciences Boards, is sponsored by The Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The primary purpose of this new committee is for NAS to assist BOEM by providing ongoing scientific feedback to most effectively manage the nation’s offshore energy resources in a way that is both environmentally and economically sound.

The long-term projections have changed little in the year since this column last reported on the annual International Energy Agency (IEA) “World Energy Outlook,” but the tone is much different. Last year’s report was concerned about finding the investments to meet demand; now the world has surpluses of oil and gas and a booming renewables industry.

Participants of this field excursion will be visiting one of the world's best examples of an ancient basin floor to slope fan complex associated with a fluvial-dominated deltaic system in the Karoo. Basin.

The Karoo basin hosts an inexhaustible amount of information on deepwater and deltaic sedimentation with present day erosion allowing 3D-viewing of laterally continuous (tens of kilometres) outcrops. The objective of this field trip is to attempt a better understanding of the basic depositional processes and facies development of deep-water sedimentation and the implications thereof for reservoir heterogeneity, lateral and vertical bed continuity and resulting reservoir architecture and quality. This two-day field trip will focus on show-casing the Whitehill and Dwyka formation, which are main targets for shale gas development in South Africa.

Cognitive bias, in its many manifestations, is the major cause of geotechnical overestimation and faulty probability forecasts in petroleum geoscience. The five most prevalent cognitive biases in petroleum E&P are: Confirmation Bias; Overconfidence; False Analogs; Anchoring; and Motivational Bias. They are caused by premature selection of theory, personal hubris, lack of perspective, lack of imagination, laziness, and excessive self-interest.
