The eastern escarpment of the Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico offers extensive multidimensional outcrops of Carboniferous strata. During this three-day trip, we will examine two stratigraphic intervals that have mound development. During the first two days, we will review in detail the stratigraphic framework of the Pennsylvanian Holder Formation (Virgilian/Gzhelian) in the Beeman-Dry-Yucca Canyon area, where phylloid algal mounds and mixed carbonate-siliciclastic stratigraphic architecture are exposed in 3-D.
On the third day, we will examine and compare deeper water mud mounds and crinoidal turbidites in the Mississippian Lake Valley Formation (Osagean/Tournaisian). This trip will show participants the various intrinsic and extrinsic parameters that control the stratigraphic architecture of these two systems, with particular emphasis on the relationships among accommodation space, mound growth potential and hydrodynamic energy in controlling mound architecture and distribution. During this three-day trip, we will have the opportunity to discuss and criticize a 3-D geo-cellular model built from these outcrops and our ability to adequately model the various key stratigraphic architecture and sedimentary bodies. The main goals of the trip are to:
- Observe phylloid algal mounds and mud mounds
- Examine high-frequency mixed carbonate-siliciclastic stratigraphy
- Compare vertical and lateral facies
- Observe the influence of syn-depositional anticlinal growth and antecedent topography
- Discuss the updip-downdip changes
- Discuss the optimum strategies for 3-D reservoir model construction
- Day 1:
- Participants will meet in the El Paso Airport Hilton Parking lot for vehicle assignments and travel to the field.
- Days 2 and 3:
- Field and return to El Paso Airport.
There are a limited number of sponsored registrations available for students on a firstcome basis. If you wish to register for one of the sponsored spots, please register online at www.aapg.org/sanantonio/registration.cfm. If sponsored space is no longer available, you can register at the full fee and/or you can place your name on the waiting list for a sponsored space in the field trip.
Important Notes Regarding Field Trips
- Field trip enrollment is limited and reserved on a first-come basis. Registration must be accompanied by full payment.
- If you register only for a field trip, a $30 non-registrant fee will be added to the field trip fee. This fee may be applied toward registration if you decide to attend the convention.
- A wait list is automatically created if a field trip sells out. The AAPG Convention Department will notify you if space becomes available. Undersubscribed field trips will be cancelled.
- Before purchasing non-refundable airline tickets, confirm that the trip will take place.
- It is important that you note your gender on your registration form for room assignments.
- Several weeks prior to the trip, participants will receive an itinerary with details of meeting points, transportation during the trip, phone and fax numbers and email addresses of hotels and trip leaders, etc. Please indicate your fax and email on your registration.
- f any field trips meet your needs or the needs of your staff, you are encouraged to register early.
- To help us better anticipate the number of attendees and avoid premature cancellation of field trips, please register well before March 20, 2008.
- Neither AAPG or trip leaders maintain insurance covering illness or injury for individuals.
