This two-day trip will combine outcrop study with core examination to compare and contrast small-scale rudist buildups on the shelf with large-scale coral-rudist buildups at the shelf margin. The analysis of facies, depositional environments, diagenesis and porosity formation and sequence stratigraphy of the Glen Rose Formation in south central Texas provides a model for new play concepts of the Stuart City - “Edwards” Formation in the subsurface. High-resolution outcrop stratal geometries will be compared with subsurface flow units.
- Day 1
- Thursday. Drive to Pipe Creek, Bandera County, Texas – 2 hr. Stop 1 – Examine the Glen Rose/Walnut/Edwards formations succession. Box Lunch at outcrop. Stop 2 – Examine roadcut at intersection of Loop 360 and Texas 2244 at Bee Caves Road in Austin. Spend night in Austin.
- Day 2
- Friday. Examine StuartCity/“Edwards” Formation cores at the Bureau of Economic Geology in Austin. Cores to be viewed are from the Pioneer Schroeder, Shell Tomasek and Shell Leppard wells, which illustrate the shelf margin to interior shelf trend. Trip ends at 5 p.m. in Austin. Bus will take participants back to San Antonio.
There are a limited number of sponsored registrations available for students on a firstcome basis. If you wish to register for one of the sponsored spots, please register online at www.aapg.org/sanantonio/registration.cfm.
