Ulvade carbonate reservoir

Asphalt-saturated Late Cretaceous carbonates are quarried in the Uvalde area. This is a carbonate oil reservoir where one can stand in the middle!

At least four billion barrels of in-place bitumen and heavy oil are found at outcrop and shallow depths in Southwest Texas. The oil is found in Upper Cretaceous sandstone and limestone reservoirs south and west of the Uvalde Salient, a Late Cretaceous uplift related to intense volcanism and igneous intrusion.

This trip will visit a well-exposed volcanic center near Uvalde and other localities on the Salient. We will visit the Uvalde Rock Asphalt Quarry in the Blewett asphalt district, where asphalt has been mined from the Anacacho shoalwater carbonates for over a century. There you will stand in an exhumed oil reservoir with hundreds of millions of barrels around you; intra-reservoir variations in porosity are easily visible. The trip concludes with a look at exposures of the later Cretaceous San Miguel and Escondido sandstones. Several pilot projects to recover bitumen from the San Miguel D have been and are being undertaken.

Note: This trip is suitable for all ability levels and dedicated guests. Out-of-town participants who do not have a Thursday night departure, are reminded to make lodging arrangements early due to the Fiesta activities.
