This field trip is an “old favorite.” At the height of the Texas wildflower season, it travels north from San Antonio across Lower Cretaceous carbonates and sandstones into the Paleozoic and Precambrian terrains of the Llano Uplift. Along the way, the colorful frontier history of the region is recounted – tales of Indians and US Cavalry, settlers and cowboys, Texas Rangers and outlaws. The region has now become famous for its developing wine-producing industry. The field trip will stop at three Hill Country wineries, where the relation between bedrock geology, terroirs and wine-types will be discussed and evaluated. This trip is specially designed for couples interested in geology, history and wine.

Pete Rose and Chock Woodruff are recognized authorities on the Lower Cretaceous and Paleozoic rocks of the Texas Hill Country, the evolution of the present Central Texas landscape and are knowledgeable fans of the emerging central Texas wine industry, Texas wineries and their bedrock geology. Pete and Chock “know the country;” they have led this classic field trip more than a dozen times since 1992. This field trip is always a memorable experience and it has been rebooked for the AAPG Annual Convention by popular demand.
