AAPG Home : Meetings : 2008 ACE-San Antonio : Short Courses : Course #15
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce geologists, engineers and hydrologists to the importance of core drilling, sampling and analysis in the exploration and development of coalbed methane and shale gas reservoirs. A well-designed coring program provides critical information relating to sorbed gas reservoir quality and potential that is available in no other way.
This information can be utilized in production modeling, economic modeling, reservoir testing, production analysis and in many other ways, all of which support technically sound, financially prudent evaluation and development of these complex reservoirs. The course will better prepare the participants for developing adequate sampling programs, identifying sweet spots in emerging and mature basins and avoiding higher-risk areas, so that return on investment can be optimized. The fundamentals covered in the course will provide participants with a better understanding of how to develop and evaluate prospects, plan and budget core collection programs and apply proper protocol for evaluating gas content data.
The course will provide an overview of similarities and differences between coalbed methane and shale gas reservoirs, a discussion of depositional systems and sedimentary facies associated with accumulation of organic matter-rich sediments, as well as principles of compositional analysis, sampling procedures and laboratory methods. The importance of coal and shale properties on various completion techniques will also be discussed.
Special emphasis will be applied to the methodology of determining gas-in-place for shale gas reservoirs, where participants will be exposed to the methodology employed in the geological, geochemical, petrophysical and engineering applications for resource evaluation. Lecture presentations will be supplemented with detailed discussions of sedimentary features and lithotypes present in coal and shale cores.
There are a limited number of sponsored registrations available for students on a first-come basis. If you wish to register for one of the sponsored spots, please register online at www.aapg.org/sanantonio/registration.cfm. If sponsored space is no longer available, you can register at the full fee and/or you can place your name on the waiting list for a sponsored space in the short course.
