SEPM President’s Reception and Awards Ceremony

SEPM President Mary Kraus invites you to an evening of celebration to honor the 2008 award winners of SEPM. The Twenhofel Medal, the highest award of SEPM given in recognition of a career of outstanding contributions to sedimentary geology, will be presented to Steve Stanley. SEPM Honorary Membership, given for both scientific contributions and service to the society, will be awarded to Brian O’Neill.

The other science award recipients are:

• Chuck Nittrouer, who will receive the Francis P. Shepard Medal in recognition of excellence in marine geology;
• Richard Fortey, the Raymond C. Moore Medal in recognition of excellence in paleontology;
• Henry Posamentier, the Pettijohn Medal for excellence in sedimentology; and
• Timothy Naish, the Wilson Award for excellence in sedimentary geology by a younger scientist.
• Additionally, Tom Van Loon will receive an SEPM Distinguished Service Award.

Paper Awards

SEPM will also honor the recipients of the Best Paper Awards for 2006 in both of our journals, Journal of Sedimentary Research and PALAIOS and the Best Presentation Awards from the 2007 Annual Meeting in Long Beach.

The Best Oral Presentation Award is a tie between two sets of presenters:

• Ron Boyd and Kristian Rumming, for "Dynamics of Downslope Sand Transport Sourced from Estuarine Density Flows" and
• Jurgen Schieber, J.B. Southard and K.G. Thaisen, for "The Sedimentology of Milk – Studying Deposition and Transport Modes of Moving Clay Suspensions."

There is also a two-way tie for Best Poster Presentation Award, which goes to

• Gary Gianniny and K. L. Miskell-Gerhards, for "Progradational Sequence Sets on the Tectonically Active Eastern Margin of the Pennsylvanian Paradox Basin, Colorado and Utah" and to
• John Counts and Steve Hasiotis, for "Neoichnologic Experiments with Modern Scarabaeid Beetle Larvae."

As always, SEPM will recognize the members of the 2008 Local Organizing Committee, without whom the meeting could not take place and SEPM Foundation Student Grant recipients.

The reception will begin at 7:00 p.m., with cocktails available at cash bars and substantial hors d'oeuvres. The awards ceremony will start at 7:30 p.m.
