Gary D. Howell, a former AAPG science director and current executive director of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, died at his home in Littleton, Colo., on May 19. He was 54.

Gary D. Howell, a former AAPG science director and current executive director of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, died at his home in Littleton, Colo., on May 19. He was 54.

A geology graduate with both bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor University, Howell first worked at AAPG from 1972 to 1979, serving as assistant editor, managing editor, publications manager and finally as AAPG's first science director and international development advisor.

He returned to AAPG in 1989 after working with ERICO on projects in Texas, Oklahoma, North Africa and the North Sea; with ENSERCH, where he focused on projects in the Middle East and Southeast Asia; and the World Bank project in Bangladesh.

Howell was serving as AAPG science director when he joined SME in 1994, which has about 16,000 members in 100 countries.
