Recently, DPA President Dan Tearpock and I discussed goals and methods of recruiting new members. As you know, that while AAPG membership is growing DPA membership continues to decline. The DPA has always been about professionalism in geology but as an organization we must grow to ensure the future of the DPA.

We discussed four ideas for recruiting new members:

  1. Expand the Membership Committee – I have asked the DPA Councilors and Officers to each recommend to me one member to serve on this committee. The Membership committee needs representatives from every section and region to be effective.
  2. Letter Campaign - One of the ideas we discussed was mailing a letter to all eligible AAPG members and inviting them to join the DPA. The purpose of the letter is to educate the member about the DPA and then invite them to join the DPA. This campaign is underway. I have also asked each of the region and section councilors to follow up the letters with phone calls to twenty eligible members.
  3. Town Hall Meetings – This has been our main effort to recruit new members the last two years. The DPA sponsored a Townhall Meeting in Midland in 2009 and Oklahoma City in 2010. David Curtis of our Washington DC office was the featured speaker at each of these events. The purpose of the Townhall Meetings is to educate potential members about the DPA and then invite them to join the DPA. We plan to hold two Townhall Meetings in the spring of 2011 in Houston and Denver. We need to identify a chairman to plan each of these events. Any volunteers interested in leading this effort?
  4. Local Community Network Meetings – One of the ideas Dan and I discussed were holding small social gatherings with our local AAPG affiliated societies and SIPES. The purpose of these gatherings would be to network and introduce potential members to the DPA. We need to establish a local presence for the DPA. A lot of ground work will have to be laid to make these gatherings successful.

If you like these ideas please support them and together let's make them work. If you have a comment or another idea please call and we will discuss it.
