Petrography in the 21st Century: Modern Tools for Elucidating Reservoir Quality in Sandstone Reservoirs

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

Discover more on sandstone reservoir quality and the modern tools and techniques needed for petrographic rock characterization. This one day course taught by, Kitty Milliken a Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin, will feature a series of lectures covering the basic architecture of particulate sedimentary rocks, methods for petrologic characterization, grain assemblages, and diagenesis, including compaction, cementation, grain replacement, and fracturing. The course will also addresses the fundamental chemical and mechanical processes that control the evolution of sandstone properties in the subsurface and the tools used to evaluate those processes. This course is part of the 2014 Fall Education Conference and will be taking place Monday, November 10th at the Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas.

Courses Details
Event: Fall Education Conference
Presentation: Petrography in the 21st Century: Modern Tools for Elucidating Reservoir Quality in Sandstone Reservoirs
Presenter(s): Kitty Milliken
Date: November 10th, 2014 (Monday)
Location: Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas

Who Should Attend
Exploration geologists and anyone who wants to learn more about sandstone reservoir quality and techniques for petrographic rock characterization.

Objectives
Exploration geologists and anyone with an interest in reservoir quality assessment will develop a better understanding of:

  • Modern methods for micro-scale rock characterization
  • Principal controls on reservoir quality
  • Basic science behind approaches to reservoir quality prediction

Course Content
A one-day series of lectures covers the basic architecture of particulate sedimentary rocks, methods for petrologic characterization, grain assemblages, and diagenesis, including compaction, cementation, grain replacement, and fracturing. Examples of the nature and causes of reservoir quality variations in sandstones at low and high temperatures are provided with a focus on using the character of the primary grain assemblage as a predictive guide to what will happen in the subsurface.

Many of the same techniques and approaches showcased in this course can be applied to unconventional targets, so the focus here is intentionally broad. The course addresses some basic questions: “Why look at rocks?” and “What tools do we have for rock characterization at the pore scale?”
