How-to Guide: When And Where Are the Best Uses for Geomechanics?

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

The AAPG course entitled “Practical Geomechanics” is designed for geoscientists interested in stress measurements and their application to problems arising from rock failure. This course is part of AAPG’s upcoming Fundamentals Education Conference, taking place November 9-13, in Houston.

This interdisciplinary course encompasses the fields of rock mechanics, structural geology and petroleum engineering to address a wide range of geomechanical problems that arise during the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs. We will be covering the exploration, assessment and production phases of petroleum reservoir development.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify situations where geomechanics can be applied profitably
  • Determine the impact of critically-stressed fractures on drilling and production
  • Define different modes of rock failure and deformation
  • And much more...

“Practical Geomechanics” is taught by David Wiprut, Ph.D., who is the Global Discipline Head for Baker Hughes Geomechanics in Houston. He has been working on geomechanics problems in the oil and gas industry since 1996.
