Explorer Foundation Update

For the AAPG Foundation, call it a matter of one good deed deserving another. That good deed was the Foundation’s decision to help sponsor the AAPG Sustainable Development in Energy Competition, a global contest in which students and young professionals conceive and then create energy projects that promote sustainable development within social, environmental and economic impacts. The ”another” good deed? It’s happening again, and it’s happening right now – an encore opportunity for the Foundation to have a global impact through its support of practical, tangible uses of geosciences.

The AAPG Foundation sponsored the Geology Merit Badge program at the latest Scout Jamboree in summer 2023. The event attracted nearly 15,000 Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers.

Online registration will open in mid-February for this year’s annual meeting of the AAPG Foundation Trustee Associates – an event slated at a unique and world-famous setting. This year’s TA meeting will be held May 19-22 at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C.

Explorer Foundation Update

A new named grant has been created by the AAPG Foundation in honor of the late Hannes Leetaru, an admired, award-winning geoscientist and longtime presence in AAPG leadership who died in May 2023. The Hannes E. Leetaru Memorial Grant, sparked by a request and contributions from colleagues and friends Gary Weir and Reggie Spiller, is intended for a geoscience graduate student whose research concerns the origin, exploration and development of geology or petroleum geology.

T. Boone Pickens, a celebrated entrepreneur and internationally famed AAPG member who generously supported the AAPG Foundation and other geoscience initiatives throughout his life, has made a major donation via his estate. Pickens died in September 2019, but the T. Boone Pickens Foundation last month announced it has given the AAPG Foundation a grant for $3 million to be used to expand the scope of the Boone Pickens Digital Geology Fund. The gift will accelerate and sustain technological developments in the field of digital geology, an initiative started in 2008 because of a $9.4 million gift from Pickens to the Foundation.

Marta S. Weeks-Wulf, a longtime AAPG Foundation Trustee Associate who embodied legendary civic promotion as well as historic philanthropic support to the AAPG Foundation, died Sept. 1 at Hobe Sound, Fla. She was 93. The daughter of a petroleum geologist and the wife and daughter-in-law of world-renowned petroleum geologists, Marta generously and continuously supported the AAPG Foundation as well as a host of other cultural and humanitarian causes around the world.

Explorer Foundation Update

With the continuing support of the Petroleum Professional Development Center of Midland College and the AAPG Foundation, the Earth and Space Science for Teachers class was offered again during 2022-23 – a 15-week online course designed to help bring excellent foundational Earth science content knowledge, teaching resource and resource exploration skills to geo- and environmental science educators.
