Meet Amanda L. Kern

Childhood ambition:
I cannot remember a time when I did not have a collection of rocks, seashells or sand in my pockets. I have always had a fascination with nature and after visiting Yellowstone National Park as a young teenager, I knew that I wanted to work in natural sciences. After a few semesters, I finally settled on geology as my major and the rest is history!

My Career

Education:
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (B.S. Geology, 2005); Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (M.S. Environmental Science/Geology, 2010)
Companies and Institutions I’ve worked for:
I began my career working as a geo-tech part time while attending TAMU-CC for my undergraduate degree. I eventually worked for LMP Exploration, LLC as an intern/geo-tech in Corpus Christi, Texas until I graduated. After college, I worked for Neumin Production and after a couple years decided that obtaining my master’s degree would be beneficial to my career. So I joined EOG Resources in the Corpus Christi, Texas office in 2007, finished my masters, and eventually transferred with the company when our new division in San Antonio opened in 2010.
Basins I have worked:
Gulf Coast/South Texas
Years of Experience in the Petroleum Industry:
7-8 years

My Pathway

First Well/Research Program:
South Texas
My Geo-Specialties:
Carbonates
My fondest career memory or proudest moment:
My first Eagle Ford horizontal well that surpassed our best producing well in the EOG SA division in terms of BO. It has been eclipsed by other wells since then but that moment of amazement in what I accomplished will forever stay with me.

My Inspiration

My inspiration and motivation comes from:
The Great Outdoors! And my family for supporting me.
My most memorable idols/mentors:
Dr. Jennifer Smith-Engle, Dr. D. Yoskowitz, Dr. R. McLaughlin for pushing me to think above and beyond my capabilities and Roberto Alaniz at EOG Resources for guiding me through my first years at EOG.

My Impact

AAPG member since:
2004
AAPG committees:
PROWESS
Society Affiliations:
AAPG, YPE, STGS, CCGS

My Best Advice:

Never underestimate your capabilities to achieve what others are afraid to do.
