Chichen Itza, located 200 kilometers/125 miles west of Cancun, is easily the most famous site in the Yucatan Peninsula. The massive site takes at least a day to explore. Chichen Itza was founded in 445 A.D. and inhabited until 1204 A.D., when it was mysteriously abandoned. The city is divided into two areas: Old Chichen Itza, built between A.D. 600 and 900, and New Chichen, constructed in the 10th century. The buildings are characterized by a fusion of architectural styles reflecting the influence of different cultures. Of these, the Puuc and Chenes styles are regarded as the most ancient.
The imposing pyramid is the site of a remarkable event: Every equinox (21-22 March and September) the play of light and shadow on the north staircase of the pyramid gives the illusion of a descending serpent -- Kukulcan. Thousands of visitors flock to the area to witness the phenomenon every year. Other important structures include the Sacred Sacrificial Well (Cenote Sagrado); the Ball Court (Juego de Pelota), the largest of its kind in the Americas; the Temple of the Warriors (Templo de los Guerreros); and the Observatory (El Caracol). A museum and shops are also on site.
