Pilar Luna Erreguerena
Head of Underwater Archaeology Area at the National Institute of Anthropology and History of México

Pilar Luna Erreguerena, with over 24 year's participation in Underwater Archaeology projects around the world, will present "Underwater Archaeology: A New Vision of the Past." She will guide you through the fascinating and mysterious worlds of the cultural heritage lying under this country's waters. Mexico's archaeological and historical patrimony is well known all over the world; however, there is an ancestral legacy that remains submerged. She will talk about the remains of Pleistocene fauna and of men who inhabited the Yucatan Peninsula thousands of years ago, as well as traces of pre-Columbian cultures that worshiped their aquatic deities in lakes, springs and cenotes. The audience will learn about reminiscences of ships that faced their final destiny in American waters during the exploration, discovery, conquest and colonization of this land.

Archaeologist Luna Erreguerena, MA in Anthropology (UNAM), is the pioneer of underwater archaeology in Mexico. She has directed assorted inland and offshore projects, with the participation of national and international institutions. Training new underwater archaeologists has also been one of her main concerns. Currently, her area at INAH is undertaking three important projects: the 1630-1631 New Spain's Fleet Research Project, the Inventory and Diagnosis of Submerged Cultural Resources in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Underwater Archaeological Atlas to Register, Study and Protect Cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Ms Luna Erreguerena is member of several national and international councils. She is international advisor for the Committee for Research and Exploration of the National Geographic Society. In January 1997 she received the Merit Award from the Historical Archaeology Society, "for pioneering in the recognition, exploration and preservation of the underwater archaeological heritage of Mexico."
