Who Should Attend

Geoscientists interested in the Tertiary sedimentary evolution of the western Gulf of Mexico and those involved in exploration and production from shallow-marine Tertiary siliciclastics.

Objectives and Content

Cuts along new roads in northern Veracruz have provided a unique opportunity to study Upper Oligocene-Middle Miocene facies and relate them to the Miocene gas sands of the recently discovered Lankahuasa field in the continental shelf and other potential reservoir facies offshore Veracruz. Lankahuasa is the first discovery of non-associated gas in the continental shelf and has shown the hydrocarbon potential of this area.

The aim of this field trip is to describe and discuss the Upper Oligocene-Middle Miocene section with emphasis on the reservoir characteristics of the sandstone bodies, depositional environments, potential source areas, sediment supply to shelf and deep-water environments, the sequence stratigraphic framework, and how the observed features may influence exploration and development offshore.

On the first day, there will be a presentation on the regional geologic framework and a session in the visualization center in Poza Rica to introduce people to the area and its economic importance. We will discuss onshore-offshore correlations and structure and review 3-D seismic of the Lankahuasa area. After this, we will visit several road cuts to observe the characteristics on the main facies and their spatial relationships.

On the second day, we will visit a few more Miocene outcrops before stopping on a volcanic neck of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt on our way to Veracruz, where we will summarize observations and have a final discussion.

Complementary to the geology part of the field trip, short visits to the archaeological sites of El Tajín and Quiahuixtlan will show how ancient cultures utilized some of the Tertiary rocks of the area for construction and carving.
