This trip will be beneficial to geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and anyone interested in enhancing their understanding of modern siliciclastic and carbonate depositional environments as analogs in subsurface studies.
Del Carmen Island is an excellent recent carbonate Barrier Island System where we will be able to observe wonderful outcrops on beach rocks, storm deposits, tidal inlets, and deltas.
From Ciudad del Carmen, we will move to the Grijalva Delta, one of the most outstanding siliciclastic wave deltas in the world. We will be able to walk the progradational ridges of the Grijalva Delta and other fluvial deposits like anastomosing, meandric, and straight channel facies.
The area of this field trip was once inhabited by the Mayan and Olmeca cultures, and there is a close relationship between the development of these cultures and the depositional environments of the area. We will have the opportunity to look at these relationships and visit the Comalcalco ruins as well as the La Venta Museum in Villahermosa, where we will enjoy a light and sound show.
