Course Content

AVO Techniques have successfully identified gas reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, West Africa, and elsewhere, revolutionizing how we explore and risk prospects. Now, single-frequency sections and maps developed with high-resolution spectral decomposition techniques can relate amplitude maxima and minima to geological events with unprecedented stratigraphic accuracy. This course will provide an introduction to spectral decomposition, integration of spectral and AVO analysis, and frequency-versus-offset (FVO) with an emphasis on state-of-the-art integrated analysis for gas sand exploration and quantification.

Day One:

Part One --
Motivating examples; basic theory and terminology
Part Two --
Applications including tuning analysis, thickness determination, the interpretation of reflectivity patterns, and modeling individual reflection events with and without pay

Day Two:

Part Three --
Data Quality, conditioning, and diagnostic issues for properly applying frequency-dependent AVO; other pitfalls
Part Four --
How to use amplitude and frequency attributes successfully for gas exploration, future directions, and conclusions
