Vertical
Seismic Profiling (VSP) is a measurement procedure in which seismic
receiver stations are aligned vertically, distinguishing the data-recording
procedure from conventional horizontal seismic profiling. Seismic
data recorded with a vertical receiver geometry have many valuable
applications.
In this module we explore the abilities of such data to precisely
calibrate stratigraphic depth to specific waveform features of surface-recorded
seismic reflection data, and to provide an independent, high-resolution
image of the subsurface in the near-vicinity of the VSP receiver well.
This learning program consists of two parts: 1) the exploration of
key concepts about Vertical Seismic Profiling, and 2) an exercise
in which VSP data is visually correlated to seismic data.
