For over 10,000 years,  Egypt has been a cross-roads for North Africa, the circum-Mediterranean and the Middle East trade routes.

Its stunning archeological ruins, striking desert scenery, world-class diving in the Red Sea, golf, horse-back or camel riding and a bustling and friendly population make it an exciting travel opportunity for the entire family.

The Egyptian government's most comprehensive web site with many travel agencies in Egypt is provided in this hotlink.

Popular tourist destinations include:

Cairo:

Touring Cairo can take several days to do properly.  The most common sites include 1)the pyramids of Giza; Saqarra; Egyptian Museum; Mohammed Ali Mosque and the Khan El Khalili open air market. The sound and light show at the Pyramids is also a pouplar stopover.

In addition, there are excellent golfing opportunities with world-class sand traps!

Private tour guides are available and recommended.  Transportation is by small mini-bus or taxi.  Recommended guides shown on this web site provide transportation in vehicles equipped with comfortable seats with seat belts and knowledgeable guides.

Luxor:

Luxor is home to the famous valley of the kings where Tut's tomb was discovered in 1922.  Significant excavations continue today, with the most recent discovery of the tombs of 50 or more sons of Ramses II.  The temple of Karnak, Hatshepsut's palace, Neferteri and Ramses II tombs offer truly remarkable archeology sites. The desert scenery is also striking, and excellent accommodations are available at a number of 5 star hotels.

Nile Cruises (4 days, 3 nights) originating in Luxor

Large numbers of boats leave Luxor for day, 3 night cruises that leisurely work their way upstream toward Aswan, where additional sites included the Nubian Museum, Elephantine Island and a host of impressive archeological sites with magnificent desert scenery.  Intermediate stops include Kom Ombo and other sites reached largely only by boat.  Options are given the traveller at Aswan to take a 1/2 day or longer additional tour to Abu Simbel, located on the Nile near the Sudanese boarder.
Abu Simbel features the monuments of Ramses II which greeted visitors for eons as they floated down the Nile from Sudan and Ethiopia.  These spectacular temples dedicated to Ramses and his wife Nefertari were saved from inundation by the Aswan high dam through multi-national efforts to relocate the tombs above the lake in the 1960's.  Twice a year, and the equinox, sunlight enters the tomb and shines directly upon 3 of Egypt's ancient god, leaving a statue of the God of darkness shrouded in shadow.

Siwa/Bahariya and Farafra/Kharga Oases (Desert Tours)

Desert tours featuring pristine dune fields, ancient ruins, caravan routes and remote oasis are available through many private tour companies. They offer a glimpse at the more remote parts of Egypt.

Most trips take several days or a week to complete, so plan well ahead.

Diving and Snorkeling (Red Sea):

Excellent 3-5 star resort hotels are located along the Red Sea coast line. They offer excellent dining, shopping and relaxation supplemented by snorkeling or diving excursions.  The Red Sea reefs are among some of the best developed in the world.  Dive or snorkel boats can be rented daily or for extended trips which include deep sea fishing.

Resort locations are 5-7 hours from Cairo by car, and 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by air.
