Welcome to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Northeast Africa and Egypt Regional Team Web Page.

This page is devoted to helping AAPG members as well as other geologists find information on Egypt's hydrocarbon systems and the people who explore for them.

We work closely with the Egyptian Petroleum Exploraton Society (EPEX).

Key contacts and leaders for AAPG in Egypt

Services of this web site:

We provide a links and communication tools to several societies, as well as travel and safety tips for visitors to Egypt and surrounding areas.

Background on Egypt's Petroleum Systems:

Egypt is about 30% larger than the state of Texas and has a number of proven petroleum systems. These systems are generally lumped into the Western Desert, Gulf of Suez and Nile/Med systems.

Upper Egypt's basins were formed in the Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous as non-marine rifts and are largely unexplored.  The Red Sea basins have not yet proven productive, but remain a potentially significant target.

The petroleum geology of Egypt is summarized in Dolson, J.C., M.V. Shann, S. Matbouly, C. Harwood, R. Rashed and H. Hammouda,  2001, The Petroleum Potential of Egypt, in., M.W. Downey, J.C. Threet and W.A. Morgan (eds.), Petroleum Provinces of the Twenty-first Century, American Association of Petroleum Geologists Memoir 74, p. 453-482.

The map shown is a 3D view of the depth to basement (Pre-Cambrian) in Egypt.

Egypt has discovered or 17.5 BBOE of hydrocarbons, most recently in giant gas fields in the Nile/Mediterranean.

The Nile/Med play is one of the most active deep water gas plays currently underway in the world.

The Gulf of Suez offers some of the most challenging sub-salt imaging and exploration in the world, but is a prolific rift basin with over 9 BBOE reserves to date.

The Western Desert continues to unlock new reserves with new ideas, new 3D data and deeper drilling unlocking the Jurassic potential.

Information on the petroleum business in Egypt, upcoming bid-rounds and past production can also be obtained through the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation's web page.
