GTW: Deepwater and Ultra Deepwater Reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico

Procedure

Presenters make brief 10-15-minute presentations, then open the floor for discussion. The goal is to encourage exchanges on topics of value to geologists, geophysicists, and engineers.

What is special about a GTW? People who are actively working in deepwater and ultra deepwater plays can talk in small groups, discuss concepts, and learn from each other. For informed, small-group, focused discussions that focus on practical, applied and relevant geosciences, there’s nothing like it!

Day 1 - March 16

The goal is to develop knowledge that can enhance exploration, production, and appraisal efforts in deepwater reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico. Experienced practitioners and researchers will participate in lively discussions to share both personal experiences and best practices in applying geology, geophysics, and engineering data to the challenges of exploration, appraisal, development drilling, and reservoir characterization and simulation. Sessions will include results of studies on existing fields, as well as exploration frontiers, geophysical issues, and emerging technologies for imaging and data acquisition. The workshop will conclude with “big picture” discussions in which lessons learned are applied to future endeavors. To facilitate the exchange of ideas, there will be no abstracts or publications released from this symposium, much like the very successful SPE Advanced Technology Workshops. Participants will have many opportunities to network and to discuss with fellow practitioners.

The goal of this session is to review the results of field studies conducted by the DeepStar consortium, and sponsored by RPSEA, and then to relate those sometimes surprising results to specific fields in the GOM. By doing so, participants will improve their understanding of the characteristics of deepwater reservoirs and thereby enhance development efforts and appraisal outcomes.

A lookback study on the appraisal programs of 30+ producing, deepwater Gulf of Mexico fields was performed providing a comparison of how well reserves and production rates were predicted at the time of sanction versus updated reserves and rates after at least 2 years of production.

This talk illustrates how real time analysis of pressure and performance data by an integrated team has produced a set of "evergreen" reservoir simulations, as well as more realistic geological models. The latter have enhanced our ability to realistically evaluate new Miocene stepout and exploration opportunities.

This session will focus on current and historical exploration challenges in the unique aspects of different parts of the Gulf of Mexico. Participants will discuss lessons learned from established fields, and will review data acquisition and processing methods. Which attributes mean the best production? Large fault blocks with relatively little large-scale faulting and fracturing? Uniform lithologies? Overpressured reservoirs? Participants will discuss published data and case studies.
