SESSION 5: Shale Gas and Unconventionals: Fractures, Pore Pressure
Brief presentations followed by breakout discussion groups who respond to questions, and pose questions to presenters
Co-Chair: Daniel Moos, Geomechanics International, Inc.
Co-Chair: Mohammed Ameen, Saudi Aramco
Petrophysics Rick Lewis - Schlumberger One-sentence description Lithology-Based Modeling of Velocity and Pore Pressure
Eric Eslinger - The College of St. Rose, Eric Geosciences Inc.
(Authors: Eric Eslinger, Eric Geosciences Inc.; Alan Curtis, BHP)
A work flow is described for estimation of pore pressures using lithology-based velocity modeling with well logs as the primary data.
The Application of Geomechanics in Shale Gas Plays
Daniel Moos - Chief Scientist, GeoMechanics
International Although the geomechanical principles that determine their response to drilling, completion and production are the same in shale gas as in other plays, their unique and varied structural and tectonic settings require re-thinking the ways in which these principles are applied.
Stimulation Design and Monitoring
Randy LaFollette - BJ Services
The presentation will focus on hydraulic fracture geometry in shales, the materials used in the fracturing process, and treatment monitoring via microseismic.
The near critical state of the earth’s brittle crust means that small (<0.01 bar) perturbations of the ambient stress field cause failure on pre-existing cracks thereby illuminating features of critical importance to the extraction of fluids from reservoirs. SET allows these very weak signals to be seen and analyzed.
Integrated “Pseudo Static” and Dynamic 3D Flow Modeling
Jim Thom - JOA
(Authors: Jim Thom, JOA; Jim Erdle, CMG)
Are existing simulators capable of modeling processes during simulation and production of fractured reservoirs such as shale gas reservoirs, or are new approaches needed?
PRELUDE: Developing a pore pressure predictive workflow for the Bossier/Haynesville
Brent Couzens - Shell Oil Company
A pore pressure predictive method is presented for the Bossier/Haynesville based on an understanding of the multiple pore pressure generation and release mechanisms that are unique to resource plays.
11:30 am - 12:30 pm
OPEN “IN-THE-ROUND” DISCUSSION
Presenters pose questions to the audience. Audience members question back.
12:30 - 1:45 pm
LUNCH: Keynote Presentation

Brent Couzens - Shell Oil Company
A pore pressure predictive method is presented for the Bossier/Haynesville based on an understanding of the multiple pore pressure generation and release mechanisms that are unique to resource plays.
