Fractured Reservoirs Round-Up

"The meeting on Fractured Reservoirs was an excellent opportunity meet people from industry and from academia and share experiences and ideas on the ways to better understand reservoirs characterized by complex fault and fractured networks. The main objective of the meeting to bring together practitioners of these key disciplines to characterize fault and fracture network to discuss the experience gained, to date, in the integration of these disciplines and the new approaches currently in development was achieved thanks to an informal and relaxed environment that helped discussions.

The two days were opened by two illuminating keynote speeches by John Cosgrove on the importance of the geological history of the host rock and its control on the development of characteristics of the fracture network and its reservoir potentials and by Davide Casabianca on the impact of uncertainties and assumptions when trying to develop fractured reservoirs.

The presentations and posters offered the opportunity to get updated on the newest ideas, approaches and technologies to characterize the fault and fracture network from the microscopic to the reservoir scale ... but also to understand the remaining uncertainties and the way forward!"

The meeting was closed by a final plenary session to summarise the main outcome of the conference and delineate the how to move in the future based on the knowledge acquired. From the final session it was clear that in the immediate future successful players will be companies able to innovate and sometimes revolutionise their exploration and development practices. The main objective of the future exploration should be to find new plays in maturing basins or develop resources so far thought inaccessible by integrating the results of multidisciplinary studies that should include structural geology, fracture modeling, geomechanics and rock physics.
