The Sichuan Basin, China, is commonly considered to contain the world’s most abundant shale gas resources. Although its Paleozoic marine shales share many basic characteristics with successful U.S. gas shales, numerous geologic uncertainties exist and Sichuan Basin shale gas production is nascent.

Understanding the detailed fault architecture of reverse faulting is critical for understanding the processes involved in fold-thrust belts as well as predicting the degree of fault compartmentalisation, the relationship between folds and faults, the distribution of strain and sub-seismic faulting deformation.

To better predict the architecture of reservoirs and the location of undiscovered resources in fluvial-dominated strata a sound chronostratigraphic framework is needed. This study reassesses the stratigraphic framework of petroleum-bearing Jurassic fluvio-lacustrine successions in the Eromanga, Surat and Clarence Moreton Basins of eastern Australia.

The giant natural gas accumulation recently discovered within the Sinian (Neoproterozoic) Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin of southwestern China represents a new and important supplement to the ancient Neoproterozoic–Cambrian petroleum systems worldwide.

The temporal evolution of hydrocarbons (~500 million barrels oil) and its relationship to the orogenic events of the Longmen Shan thrust belt have been extensively debated. The hydrocarbons occur as solid bitumen, as dykes and/or coatings within/along faults/fractures, and as present day oil seeps.
