Kuala Lumpur AAPG YP Chapter event - AAPG Guest Lecturer Talk

On 9 March 2016, AAPG YP Chapter Kuala Lumpur organized a technical talk entitled “South China Sea key geological data points: A way to avoid academic debates”. We are grateful to have had speaker Mr Herman Darman from Shell International E&P to volunteer his time in KL to give a technical talk for AAPG YP KL chapter.

It was a good response of 20 young professionals and students attending the talk, held at the PETRONAS office in KLCC Tower 2. Before the talk, a brief introduction of the main mission of AAPG KL YP chapter was given and attendees were advised that the AAPG KL YP chapter will host monthly events and participants were strongly encouraged to take part in these events.

Mr Herman started off his talk by going through the different models that explain the evolution of South China Sea tectonics. He started off by comparing Prof Tapponier’s extrusion model and Prof Hutchison’s proto subduction model. However, he also emphasized that different models has its flaw and reminded the audience to be aware and how to integrate all the data.

Mr Herman spent the 2nd half of his talk showing seismic line examples from all over South China Sea and explaining the seismic interpretation that has been done or interpreted from the literatures. He also offered the students from the audience to try a hand at interpreting the seismic and asked different ideas, generating audience discussion. It was certainly a fruitful learning experience for the young professionals and students as they got to see and interpret a couple of seismic lines from all over the South China Sea.

A Q/A session drew an enthusiastic response.  Mr Herman answered every question that was asked.  It was a good turnout by the young professionals and the university students.  We would like to thank Mr Herman Darman for his time.
