Exciting highlights from an event organised by AAPG student chapter

Student Chapter at University Technology PETRONAS holds Geoscience event

Geoscience Exhibition and Competition (GEnC) was the first event to be organized by American Association of Petroleum Geologists Student Chapter of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (AAPG-UTP-SC). GEnC involved all geology and geosciences students from Malaysia. There were four main events in GEnC, which were Outcrop Description Presentation, Outcrop Display, Geoscience Companies Exhibition and Talk, and Grand Dinner. Through this event, our aim was to enhance the understanding of geosciences in students and to prepare the students to face the challenges that they may encounter in industry. This event was led by our project manager, Ms. Lee Ming Xiang and assistant project manager, Ms. Nadira Wahida, followed by 113 members of committees.

Geoscience Exhibition and Competition (GEnC) 2015 was organized on 8and 9 July 2015. The response was overwhelming as there were a total of 135 participants from five IPTA and IPTS consisting of UTP, UM, UMS, UMK and Curtin University Sarawak. Five well-known Geoscience companies were also involved in the exhibitions and talks viz. Schlumberger, SHELL, LHOIST, JX Nippon and IHS. Exhibition and outcrop display by participants were held on 8 July while outcrop description presentation was held on 9 July. The talks and exhibitions from the five companies took place simultaneously on both days.

The event began with a welcome speech by our project manager, Ms. Lee Ming Xiang. This was followed by the opening ceremony conducted by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Shahir Liew, Dean of Faculty of Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering accompanied byGEnC’s advisor, Associate Professor Askury bin Abd Kadir and GEnC’s project manager, Ms. LeeMing Xiang. VIPs then visited companies’ and participants’ booths.

Exhibition, outcrop display and outcrop description presentations were the three main categories in the competition part. Participants had to decorate and display their poster on their respective booths and showcase their creativity, organization, attractiveness of booth and relevancy of outcrop presented. Eight Judges from UTP, UMS, UMK, Curtin University Sarawak and SHELL judged and examined every teams’ exhibitions thoroughly.

Talks from Schlumberger and JX Nippon were organized during this time. Speakers from these companies shared their knowledge and experience with the students from UTP.

The second day commenced with presentations from 9 UTP teams. Talks from SHELL, LHOIST and IHS were conducted after this.

Last but not least, the most anticipating ceremony, prize distribution ceremony was carried out as usual. Best Poster award went to Gondwana team from UMK, Best Booth award went to The Crockers team from UMS while the Best Presentation award was given to Holocene team from UM. Next, Second runner up for overall category is awarded to GeoNinjas team from UTP, First runner up is awarded to The Crockers team from UMS and lastly, the overall champion went to Holecene team from UM.

In conclusion, the first Geoscience Exhibition and Competition (GEnC) 2015 was a big success. We would like to express our gratitude to all the supporting organizations and sponsors – Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, AAPG Asia Pacific and Geological Society of Malaysia.
