In the evening of September 8th, the AAPG Curtin Student Chapter hosted Manager of Energy Geoscience, Ameed Ghori from the Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum for a technical talk on basins and petroleum systems modelling as well as the future of the petroleum industry as part of the AAPG Visiting Geoscientist Program. Students from undergraduate through to post-graduate, and university staff attended the talk, extending their gratitude to Mr Ghori for his thorough presentation. We were also lucky enough to have the President of AAPG Asia-Pacific Region, Peter Grant in attendance.

Mr Ghori outlined the classifications of petroleum basins and their respective productivities, and noted the changing industry from the conventional structural traps to the increasingly common ‘unconventional reservoirs’ that are safer but more expensive to access. He also shared projections of future energy demand and production sources with emphasis Australia’s role and the challenges we face to make the large reserves economical to extract.

The evening was concluded with questions followed by a networking session. Mr Ghori provided an excellent insight into the dynamic petroleum industry and how the current prices have affected the reservoirs, techniques and dominant players worldwide.
