In March, Kuala Lumpur’s AAPG YP Chapter welcomed Herman Darman, Shell International E&P, to give a technical talk titled “South China Sea Key Geological Data Points: A Way to Avoid Academic Debates.”

Darman’s talk enjoyed a good response with, 20 young professionals and students attending the event, held at the PETRONAS office in KLCC Tower 2. Before the talk, a brief introduction of the main mission of AAPG KL YP chapter was given, and attendees were advised that the AAPG KL YP chapter will host monthly events. YP members are strongly encouraged to participate in these events.

Mr. Herman opened his talk by going through the different models that explain the evolution of South China Sea. He began by comparing professor Tapponier’s extrusion model and professor Hutchison’s proto subduction model. He also emphasized that different models have their own flaws — and reminded the audience to be aware of this and know how to integrate all available data.

Mr. Herman spent the second half of his talk showing seismic examples from all over South China Sea, explaining the seismic interpretation that has been done or that is available in literature. He also offered the students from the audience to try a hand at interpreting the seismic datasets and discussed different ideas, generating audience participation. It was certainly a fruitful learning experience for the young professionals and students, as they got to see and interpret a couple of seismic lines from all over the South China Sea.

The ending Q&A session drew an enthusiastic response — Mr. Herman answered every question that was asked. All-in-all it was a good turnout of young professionals and university students.

We would like to thank Mr. Darman for his time.
