IN THIS ISSUE:
GEOLOGIC NOTES - Hyperpycnal flow variability and slope organization on an Eocene shelf margin, Central Basin, Spitsbergen

Documentation of the architecture of a clinoform in the Tertiary Central Basin of Spitsbergen allows the examination of continuous-flow turbidites from origin at the shelf edge, through deposition on the slope, and bypass to the basin floor. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

GEOHORIZON - Numerical simulation of water injection into layered fractured carbonate reservoir analogs

Although more than half of the world_s remaining oil reserves are contained in often-fractured carbonate reservoirs, current models do not predict well the complex flow patterns resulting from water injection. A characteristic production behavior is identified through numerical modeling of a carbonate reservoir analog. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

GEOHORIZON - Crustal insights from gravity and aeromagnetic analysis: Central North Slope, Alaska

Aeromagnetic and gravity data collected from the central North Slope, Alaska, provide information on deep and shallow crust structures. Two distinct geophysical domains were identified in the pre-Mississippian basement. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

Seismic expression of fracture-swarm sweet spots, Upper Cretaceous tight-gas reservoirs, San Juan Basin

Subtle structures are identified through curvature analysis of horizons mapped in 3-D seismic data from the San Juan Basin, USA. Enhanced production in this tight-gas reservoir likely results from areas of high fracture density. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

Advance of allochthonous salt sheets in passive margins and orogens

Despite recent interest in salt sheets, no published synthesis and little systematic study of emplacement exists. Therefore, a classification system of allochthonous salt-sheet emplacement styles is proposed and used to compare their evolution on passive margins and in orogenic belts. Structural geometry and evolution of the Ku, Zaap, and Maloob structures, Campeche Bay, Mexico

The Ku, Zaap, and Maloob structures, located in Campeche Bay, Mexico, comprise an important complex of fields with significant reserves. A 3-D structural model, developed from balanced cross sections and the integration of seismic and well data, will aid future drilling and exploration efforts. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

Leaves in turbidite sands: The main source of oil and gas in the deep-water Kutei Basin, Indonesia

Chemical analyses of oil, gas, and condensate recovered from upper Miocene sandstones in the deep-water Kutei Basin, Indonesia, indicate a land-plant source. Laminar coaly fragments, the dominant organic constituent, are interpreted to be derived from leaves. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

Normal fault growth and its role on the control of sedimentation during basin formation: A case study from field exposures of the Upper Cambrian Owen Conglomerate, West Coast Range, western Tasmania, Australia

The effects and controls of synrift fault history on stratal framework and facies distributions is explored through documentation of synrift successions within the Upper Cambrian Owen Conglomerate, West Coast Range, Tasmania, providing a field example for assessing basin formation. Read more… Or listen to the audio abstract now.

AAPG Bookstore Feature

The newest AAPG Memoir, #84, has just arrived. All 608 generous color pages (plus CD)! Did you know, to date, close to 7 billion barrels of oil and more than 53 trillion cubic feet of natural gas have been produced from the entire Carpathian system? It’s true. Additional new reserves may be found, especially at deeper structural levels below the Neogene foredeep and the thin-skinned Carpathian thrust belt. Visit the AAPG Bookstore.

Datapages Pay Per View

AAPG Members frequently ask… “How do I get my hands on chapter so and so from such and such Memoir or Studies?” It’s as simple as searching the Datapages archive. Any chapter or meeting abstract for $10. And, yes, that includes chapters from the new Carpathians release! Interested in a corporate subscriptions or endowing your alma mater? Call (918) 560-9430.

Unleash that author inside!

The AAPG is always interested in receiving proposals for publication in the AAPG Bulletin or as a special publication. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in publishing with the AAPG feel free to request the “Publishing with the AAPG” workbook (due out in early 2007) The average time from submission to print for the AAPG Bulletin was a smidge over 1 year YTD 2006! We’ve also heard improving our ISI impact factor will help you choose the Bulletin. So we’re working on it!
