AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition is the premier opportunity for geoscientists to update their knowledge and information about the latest technology developments. It is held annually within the USA, and this year, in Long Beach, California, from 22-25 April, with a Hollywood theme. Mohamad Amin Ahlun Nazar from Gadjah Mada University, was the Asia Pacific student representative at this event with support from Hess and Earthquest Technical LLC. Together with many other students, he was tasked with producing a documentary video of student activity at the ACE2012. He worked with Thomas Vang from Denmark, Spencer Rolfs, Jennifer, Alex, Chris from Fresno, USA, Lucien from Cameroon, as well as with Bogdan Michka of AAPG on this project. The student video of AAPG ACE 2012 can be viewed here. “Being an AAPG ACE Volunteer is an excellent opportunity for students to open their mindset about multicultural working environments in your future career”, says Amin. As the Asia Pacific student representative, he also joined the student committee meeting chaired by Richard Ball, where several new programmes proposed by the student chapter committee were discussed. Amin also proudly witnessed Khon Kaen University’s presentation that won the 2nd-place Selley Cup in the final.

As an Asia Pacific Volunteer in website management, he had the opportunity to have discussions with Bogdan Mitchka and Janet Brister, the website management team of AAPG HQ, about website matters, and both of them felt that the utilization of social media can enhance our position in the AAPG Asia Pacific and AAPG itself. Amin is grateful to AAPG for this opportunity.

Also representing AAPG Asia Pacific at this event – with kind sponsorship from Chevron Pacific Indonesia is Jasmin Jyalita of Gadjah Mada University who presented a poster entitled “Accelerating Methane Production in Reaction between Methanogen Bacteria and Coal, Pilot Project for MECBM”.

If you are a Student, we encourage you to attend or present your research in the next AAPG event to update your knowledge and improve the network opportunities.
