USM American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) Student Chapter has attended the Visiting Geoscientist Programme that was held on the 17th Mac 2013 in the Geology Department of Universiti of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.
The Visiting Geoscientist Programme is a programme where professional and experienced geoscientists share their experiences and career insights with students in order to give awareness about the oil and gas industry and the work scope of a Geoscientist. The Visiting Geoscientist Programme was combined with the USM Petroleum Geosciences Conference Exhibition (PGCE2013) trip that was held on the 18th-19th Mac 2013, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The event was organized by the AAPG Student Chapter in collaboration with the Universiti Malaya AAPG Student Chapter.
60 participants from USM including: lectures, staff, post graduate and undergraduate students attended this event. The event was held for one day from 2.00pm until 6.30pm. During the event, the students were divided into 3 groups based on their study year and level of understanding. The talks were given by Dr. Jan de Jager, Dr. Ralph Kugler and Dr Satyabrata with the titles, “Curiosity and passion – essential ingredients for finding oil and gas”, “Traveling the world for fun and profit: The life of a petroleum geologist”, and “Exploring Human Energy” respectively. All of the participants were excited to listen as it really gave a clear understanding about the oil and gas industry and the work scope of a Geoscientist. It was very interesting to watch the professionals and experienced geoscientists share their experiences and career insights with students. The Visiting Geoscientist Programme helps students gain insight to the oil and gas industry and help them choose the suitable career based on their interest upon graduation.
In conclusion, the Visiting Geoscientist Programme was a success. The lecturers, staff and students gained a lot of useful information and knowledge about the oil and gas industry. This event should be done annually so that the students can gain benefits and a clear understanding about the oil and gas industry. Other than that, the USM AAPG Student Chapter and UM AAPG Student Chapter have the chance to meet and discuss the programme and benefits in becoming an AAPG Student member.
