On 9th of October 2013, the AAPG Student Chapter in collaboration with Curtin Geology Club had organized a 2-hour session of site visit to Shell Lutong Core Centre Lab. A group of 20 students had been supervised by Dr. Nagarajan Ramasamy, the Head of Department and a senior lecturer of Department of Applied Geology, School of Engineering and Science, Curtin Sarawak.

Upon arrival, we were brought to the conference room for some introductory speech [Sau1] After that, a sedimentology expert, Terrence Lukie, shared some topics related to the sedimentation of East Borneo clastic reservoir rocks, including history of Crocker Formation in Kinabalu Foothill. We were grateful to have this site visit just right after our five-day mapping in Kundasang-Mesilau just a week before this occasion; because of that we can differentiate the drastic change of the properties of the flysch sequence between Sabah and Sarawak which is closer to each other. Another aspect told by Terrence was the borehole logging and drilling industry in regards to the exploration of oil and gas. The information was definitely going to help us in our future career. Another sedimentology expert, Ting King King, later explained about carbonate rocks in depth. Seismic interpretation and one of the logging methods was also discussed

Later, we were brought to the core samples that were placed outside the conference room. The core samples are mostly taken from a well that was run by the Sabah Shell Petroleum Co. Ltd ranging from depth of 8000 m to 9000 m. Few sedimentary rock types have been identified, ranging from mudstone to grainstone. Before heading back to our campus, we had a Q&A session with both of experts. Overall it was a beneficial site visit, since we encounter a first- hand experiences on core samples and how petroleum industry run a well logging and drilling processes.
