AAPG 'Exploration and Development of unconventional Hydrocarbons' GTW Workshop

The 2017 AAPG GTW workshop on Unconventional hydrocarbons successfully kicked-off on 20th June at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, South Africa.

The workshop focused on updating attendees on the latest development and best practices on unconventional resource exploration and divided into sessions based on the following themes:

  • Unconventional Resources, Global overview and African landscape
  • Geoscience and Engineering Characterization of Unconventional plays
  • Making the Unconventional plays work
  • Environment and Legislative issues

Kicking off on 20th June with an inaugural keynote speech delivered by Joe Rainey — President, Eastern Hemisphere, Halliburton, day 1 of the workshop included session keynotes by Niall Kramer of the South African Oil and Gas Association, SAOGA, and Vincenzo DeGennaro — Geomechanics Advisor for Europe & Africa at Schlumberger.

Day 1 of the meeting was immediately followed by a cocktail reception supported by the Geological Society of South Africa, GSSA.

On 21st June, keynotes were delivered by Phumla Ngesi of the Petroleum Agency, South Africa and Rodrigo Sequiera — Chief Technical Advisor, Halliburton.

A very useful and informative workshop
AAPG recently concluded a very successful Geo technical workshop in Convention center, Century city , Cape Town from 20th June to 21st June 2017 followed by a field trip to Tanqua -Karoo area from 22nd to 23rd June 2017 . It was attended by a no. of geoscientists from various companies world over involved in Exploration and development of unconventional resources. The conference started with address of Mr. K.B.Trivedi, Co chair of GTW and Inaugural address was delivered by Mr. Joe Rainy President , Eastern hemisphere, Halliburton and total four key note and seventeen scientific papers were presented by eminent Geo-scientist from industry and academia distributed in four sessions spread in two days . A Brain storming session after each session brought out vital issues related to session theme, where all participants contributed to best of their thought process, experience and expertise. Geological society of South Africa was a key motivator and Dr. Craig Smith , Co Chair of conference, summarized the proceedings and concluded the conference The gold sponsor of Conference was Halliburton and Shell-south Africa and GSSA sponsored various events during the conference. PASA, CGS, SAOGA, CSIR,PetroSA, SANEDI ,Shell, UCT, UWC, University of Witwaterstand sent there delegates for participation. The field trip was conducted By Dr. De Vill wickens and dr. Doug Cole , two eminent Geoscientist and veterans of Field Geology in Tanqua Karoo Region.
