On January 11, 2013, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the extension of the public comment period for EPA Region 8’s "Investigation of Ground Water Contamination near Pavillion, Wyoming” to September 30, 2013. EPA issued this draft report in December 2011.
The objective of the Agency's investigation was to determine the presence of ground water contamination in drinking water and, if possible, to differentiate shallow sources (pits, septic systems, agricultural and domestic practices) from deeper sources (gas production wells).
EPA found methane, hydrocarbons and synthetic organic compounds in water samples including in two wells that it drilled. The agency concluded that the chemical contamination was the result of hydraulic fracturing.
Industry, environmental consultants, Wyoming water development commission and the US Geological Survey have criticized EPA’s testing procedures and conclusions.
EPA plans to post additional technical information on this site, meet with stakeholders and continue to review its work in light of stakeholder comments.
