Return to WEM story

Advanced computer technology continues to help make exploration more effective -- especially
in hard to image areas like the Gulf of Mexico deepwater, where salt bodies can wreak havoc on the
travel path of seismic waves. Wave equation migration (WEM) has been around for about 30 years,
but recent advances in computing power now allow the WEM algorithm to do a better job of imaging
beneath the salt. The following example is a before (left) and after WEM (imaging processing)
comparison, deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
