Teaching the Teachers
In Colorado last year we ran contests for a poster and also a written theme paper on "water," for different grade categories (first-second, third-fourth, fifth-sixth and seventh-eighth), with the winners getting a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists (RMAG) provided the funds and a place to send or bring the entries. We advertised to teachers -- including personal calls -- but our results came from an early RMAG ad suggesting members get their kids, grandkids etc., to enter.

We had a picture of a cute second grade winner in this month's RMAG "Outcrop," (and) boy, did she get a kick out of being on the Web and in the paper.

We also had a meeting in May with our state geologist, our most popular TV weatherman and myself to plan some other activities for this year's ESW.
