98 VGP Speakers Ready to Roll

The largest and most diverse Visiting Geologist Program in its 25-year history is about to begin.

AAPG's popular VGP offering, which annually sends volunteer speakers to colleges and universities to provide students - and faculty - with current information on the industry and the profession, has grown to be a truly global operation.

Last season saw the first steps in the program's move into international arenas, with speakers being offered to Canada and the United Kingdom.

This year's roster of speakers includes 12 international speakers, including the program's first-ever for Mexico.

This year's speakers list also is divided into regions, allowing better organization, administration and contact convenience for both speakers and the schools.

Last year VGP speakers made 68 visits, reaching an estimated 2,000 students.

And in one more VGP first for this season, the program has recognized six past and current volunteers with a reception and plaques for their long-term, dedicated commitment as VGP speakers. Those being honored are:

• Susan M. Landon (over 50 visits). Charles F. Dodge (over 30 visits).
• Charles S. Bartlett (over 20 visits). Robert D. Cowdery (over 20 visits).
• Patrick J.F. Gratton (over 20 visits). Richard Steinmetz (over 20 visits).
